There
are many closed or abandoned landfills in and around Austin.
Many of these landfills were in operation before there were
rules regulating where they were located or how they were
operated. They vary in size from less than one acre to over
fifty acres. Many of them were former stone, sand, or gravel
quarries that were convenient places to dispose of municipal
waste when Austin was a much smaller place. The landfill
boundaries are often unknown or poorly defined.
Old landfills such as these
can present public safety or environmental risks and are
a particular challenge for redevelopment. The links below
provide additional information on specific topics relating
to old landfills.
