There are many closed or abandoned landfills in and around Austin. Many of these landfills were in operation before there were rules regulating where they were located or how they were operated. They vary in size from less than one acre to over fifty acres. Many of them were former stone, sand, or gravel quarries that were convenient places to dispose of municipal waste when Austin was a much smaller place. The landfill boundaries are often unknown or poorly defined.

Old landfills such as these can present public safety or environmental risks and are a particular challenge for redevelopment. The links below provide additional information on specific topics relating to old landfills.
