Water Pipe Repair on West Oltorf Street to begin
Sunday, September 6th
For Immediate Release – September 4, 2009
AUSTIN - The Austin Water Utility (AWU) will replace a 30-inch valve in a water line beneath the intersection of West Oltorf Street
and South First Street beginning Sunday, September 16, at 3 p.m. Work is scheduled to be completed Tuesday, September 8, at 6 a.m.
On August 8th, AWU crews determined that a reported leak in the area was the result of a faulty valve. Temporary repairs were made
to the valve, and AWU staff began developing a plan to make a permanent repair.
AWU made the decision to replace rather than repair the valve because of its age and condition. Repairs were scheduled for Labor
Day weekend to take advantage of lower traffic volumes during the holiday weekend. Below are the affected roads and closures:
West Oltorf Street will be reduced to one lane eastbound and one lane westbound between Oak Crest Avenue and Wilson Street.
South First Street will be reduced to one lane northbound and one lane southbound between West Live Oak Street and Herndon Lane.
The center turn lanes on West Oltorf Street and South First Street will be closed during the construction period.
Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area during the construction and seek alternate routes.
