Date: May 22, 1983

Cause of Death:Multiple stab wounds

Motive: Unknown

On Sunday 05/22/1983 Austin Police officers responded to the scene of a reported deceased person at 2900 E. 12th Street, Givens Park. Softball players arriving at the park discovered the nude body of female lying in a grassy area near the swimming pool. The victim was identified as Esther Guvera Broberg, the 35 year old mother of two daughters. The initial investigation determined that Esther Broberg died as the result of multiple stab wounds. Trauma to her body indicated that she had been run over with a motor vehicle. There were also indications that she may have been sexually assaulted.

Further investigation determined that Esther had been out with friends at a nearby club until the early morning hours of 05/22/83. She was last seen by friends walking in the area of Givens Park.

On 06/09/1983 Homicide investigators interviewed Joe Reyes. Reyes reportedly had been with Broberg and some other friends at the club that evening. Joe Reyes confessed to participating in the abduction, sexual assault, and murder of Esther Broberg with two other associates.

On 06/10/1983 Joe Reyes and his associates were charged with Capital Murder. The charges against Reyes and his associates were subsequently dismissed due to Reyes being declared mentally incompetent to stand trial. The three suspects were released from custody.

In June of 2005 Austin Police Department Homicide Cold Case Detectives began reviewing this case. Physical evidence recovered from the original crime scene was resubmitted to the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Laboratory. DNA analysis of the sexual assault exam conducted on Esther Broberg detected the presence of semen. Further DNA analysis identified Joe Reyes as the donor of the semen recovered from the body of Esther Broberg.

On 08/31/2006 Joe Reyes was once again charged with Capital Murder for the death of Esther Broberg. A forensic psychologist subsequently determined that Joe Reyes was incompetent to stand trial and likely never to regain competency.

On 07/06/2007 Joe Reyes was committed to a state mental facility, criminal charges pending.
