ACYS Volunteering/Capstone information

The Library strives to develop a child’s lifelong love of reading, literature and the Library. To this end, the Austin Public Library has many types of volunteer or Capstone offerings. The Capstone project gives volunteers and graduate students a snapshot of the library field by providing opportunities in many aspects of library work.


Short Term Volunteering Opportunities:

Name of event: March Madness!
Description of event/Project: Gaming tournament in conjunction with NCAA basketball tournament.
Location: Yarborough Branch
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of GameCube, Playstation and Xbox systems. Knowledge of NCAA tournament brackets and seeding.
Time frame: March 11, 2008 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Hours: 2 to 4 hours.
Duties: Set up gaming equipment, referee games, explain the tournament and NCAA seedings.

Name of event/Project: Fiesta
Description of event/project: Celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month.
Location: Southeast Austin Community Branch
Preferred Qualifications: Friendly, enjoys working with young people.
Time frame: One day (Saturday) in September
Hours: 2 to 6 hours.

One Time Projects
Name of project: Tour packets
Description of project: Prepare packets for school groups visiting Austin Public Library locations.
Location: Faulk Central Library
Preferred Qualifications: Attention to detail.
Time frame: Varies with season.
Hours: Flexible.
Duties: Prepare packets of materials for school groups visiting the Library.

Ongoing Programs
Name of event: Teen Book Club
Description of program: Monthly Young adult book club.
Location: Yarborough Branch
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge and passion for Young adult Materials.
Time frame: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 6, April 10, September 11, October 9, November 6 and December 11.
Hours: 2 hours per session.
Duties: Help lead discussion on YA books, usually one or two titles each session. Search for author Websites and background material. Bibliography/Webliography of related books and sites.

Name of program: Storytime Connection
Description of program: An early literacy program that provides reading and language outreach for toddlers and preschoolers in child-care centers.
Location: Austin area daycares.
Preferred Qualifications: Self-starter, comfortable with young children.
Time frame: Varies by location.
Hours: 2 hours per week.
Duties: Prepare and present storytimes to Austin area daycares. All materials are provided.


Longer Volunteering / Capstone Opportunities:

Name of project: Subject bibliography
Description of project: Updating online subject lists for use by staff and public.
Location: Systemwide.
Preferred Qualifications: Attention to detail.
Time frame: Ongoing.
Hours: Flexible.
Duties: Update and format book lists on the Youth Services drive. Check Find-It for holdings, add new titles and delete older ones, alphabetize by author, combine lists where needed. Format for the Web or PDF.

Name of project: Science bibliography
Description of Event/project: Organize bibliography of youth astronomy and science materials in APL collection for astronomy-themed event with activities for youth ages 10-17 and their guardians plus future system use
Location: Flexible
Skills needed: Ability to assist in organizing bibliography of youth astronomy and science materials in APL collection
Time Frame: Flexible

Name of project: 2nd Chance Books Project
Description of Event/project: 2nd Chance books is a collaborative arrangement between the Austin Public Library and the Gardner Betts Juvenile Justice Center that seeks to provide library services to pre and post adjudication facilities for young people.
Location: Flexible, we need on-site volunteers as well as technical volunteers that can work from home
Skills needed: Initiative, Customer Service, Collection Development, Collection Analysis, Database Upkeep, Library Upkeep
Time Frame: Flexible

Name of project: Windsor Park Branch Youth Services Collection Analysis/Development
Description of Event/project: Windsor Park branch
Location: Flexible, Windsor Park branch
Skills needed: Initiative, Collection Development, Collection Analysis, Library Upkeep
Time Frame: Flexible, at least 2 hours weekly

Other projects may be tailored to individual need/area of interest.
