Statement of Policies
This statement of policies is posted for the notification and convenience of Library customers. All customers are expected to abide by these standards of behavior. If you cannot abide by these policies, you are requested to leave the Library premises. If you see another customer disobeying these policies, please notify Library staff.
The mission of the Austin Public Library is to provide information and services that promote life-long learning, literacy, and love of reading to enrich the quality of life in our community.
To fulfill our mission it is important that everyone abide by the Library regulations.
Behavior that is unacceptable in the Library:
- Abandoning and Leaving Unsupervised Children, Texas Penal Code 22.041 (c)
- Bathing, except for washing of hands and face
- Bomb Threats, Texas Penal Code 42.06
- Bringing Food or Drink into Library. At the Faulk Central Library drinks and snacks purchased from Library vending machines are permitted in the 1st floor snack area.
- Bringing in Animals, except service animals (i.e., seeing eye dogs)
- Bringing in Bedrolls and/or large bulky personal belongings.
- Carrying of Weapons in the Library or on Library Grounds
- Cell Phone Use Except in Designated Areas
- Child Abuse, Texas Penal Code 22.01, 22.04, Family Code 261.001
- Disturbing Others Using the Library including excessive noise, playing radios, televisions, tape recorders, CD players, and portable video games
- Fighting, Texas Penal Code 42.01
- Entering Unauthorized (Staff) Areas
- Harassment/Sexual Harassment of customers and staff including physical, verbal, and sexual abuse, Texas Penal Code 21.01, 42.01
- Indecent Exposure, Texas Penal Code 21.08, 42.01
- Internet Policy Violations
- Intoxication Resulting from Alcohol or Drugs, Texas Penal Code 49.02
- Mistreatment and Vandalism of Library Facilities, Materials and Equipment, Texas Penal Code 28.04
- Not Wearing Shirts, Pants or Shoes
- Wearing Unbuttoned Shirts, Dresses, or Pants
- Refusal to Leave When Asked by Library Staff
- Sleeping in the Library
- Smoking, Texas Penal Code 48.01, Austin City Code 10-6-2
- Soliciting and Panhandling, prohibited by Austin City Code 9-4-13
- Theft of Library Property, Texas Penal Code 31.03
- Unattended packages, bags or personal belongings. Any unattended personal belongings will be placed in the lost and found and owner must provide necessary information for identification of property.
- Voyeurism and Peeping, Texas Penal Code 42.01
- Washing Clothes
- Wet Clothing
Thank you for complying with the Library regulations.
Anyone who violates these regulations will be subject to removal from the Library. Anyone failing to leave the premises when requested to do so by Library security, Library staff, or a law enforcement officer may be charged with criminal trespass under Texas Penal Code, 30.05.
