Texas Tales: A Trip to Bountiful
An Appreciation of Horton Foote
The Austin Public Library Foundation’s annual fundraiser, Texas Tales will take place on Saturday, September 12 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the AT&T Executive Conference Center, 1900 University Avenue, on the University of Texas campus, with Mayor Lee Leffingwell serving as the event’s Honorary Chair.
This year’s event is called “A Trip to Bountiful: An Appreciation of Horton Foote.” The Austin Public Library Foundation is honored to devote its Texas Tales program to a great Texas storyteller and of one of America’s finest dramatists, Horton Foote. Foote’s brilliant career spanned several decades and various media, including television, film, and theatre, earning him two Oscars and a Pulitzer Prize. Some of Foote’s best known works include the screenplays To Kill a Mockingbird, Tender Mercies, and The Trip to Bountiful, and the plays Young Man from Atlanta and Dividing the Estate.
The evening’s program will include a brief reading by Wilborn Hampton, a New York Times theatre critic and author of the forthcoming biography, Horton Foote: America’s Storyteller. Cast members from the Austin-filmed, critically-acclaimed television series Friday Night Lights will read selections of Foote’s work. Live music will be provided by the Tosca String Quartet and Balmorhea.
Tickets are $100 and all proceeds from the event benefit the Austin Public Library Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 1995 to increase public awareness of the Austin Public Library and its importance to the community, and to enhance library collections, programs, and services.
Major sponsorships for Texas Tales: A Trip to Bountiful have been generously provided by Texas Gas Service, HEB, DLA Piper, AT&T, and LCRA.
