Home Movie Day
Home Movie Day takes place on Sunday, October 19 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Prothro Theater at the Harry Ransom Center on the University of Texas at Austin campus.
Austinites are invited to submit their family films -- no video, please. All films will be inspected and those in good condition will be screened for everyone to enjoy. In addition, local film experts will offer advice on caring for family films and discuss why yesterday's home movies are important today. There will also be prizes, games and refreshments. This event is free and open to the public. For more information please call 512-495-4691 or visit www.cityofaustin.org/library.

Last year, Austin Home Movie Day attendees enjoyed footage of Austin neighborhoods in the 1960s, some dramatic teenage angst in the early work of an Austin filmmaker, and many more historic amateur films brought in by members of our community.
About Home Movie Day
Home Movie Day is a "bring your own film" festival where community members can have their own home movies inspected by local film archivists, learn more about how to care for home movies as family heirlooms, and watch films that capture how our lives, neighborhoods, and communities have changed over the decades. Home Movie Day emphasizes cultural heritage preservation, community connections, and the role of individual people in historic change.
The annual Home Movie Day event was founded in 2003 by film archivist Snowden Becker who was concerned at the number of historic home movies that are being lost to neglect. These films must be properly archived so that future generations can benefit from them. According to Becker home movies are like a time capsule -- not only a valuable part of your childhood, but the childhoods of other people who grew up in the same era. Most importantly, they are part of our collective historical and cultural record that could easily be lost forever.
