Manchaca Road Branch Re-Opens after Remodeling and Renovation Project
Open House Celebration on Saturday, March 29, 2008

Manchaca Road Branch

On Saturday, March 29, 2008 the Manchaca Road Branch, located in south Austin at 5500 Manchaca Road will re-open after an almost two year renovation and remodel project. The project was part of the Library’s Capital Improvement budget which entailed a general interior renovation, relocation of a Telecommunications Room, and a complete remediation of asbestos. The interior renovation includes a new Michael & Susan Dell Wired For Youth area, a new entry vestibule, new carpeting and paint throughout, and a complete remodeling of the public restrooms.

The community is invited to attend an open house celebration. Beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 29 the festivities will include refreshments, a short reading by young adult author David Rice, music by the Austin Jazz Workshop, and at 11:00 a.m. a traditional puppet show presentation of "Why Cowboys Sing in Texas.”

All programs are free and open to the public. For additional information please call (512) 974-7400 or visit www.cityofaustin.org/library.

About the Manchaca Road Branch

This branch was originally built in 1974. Initial funding for the Manchaca branch was provided through a 1960 city bond election that approved $350,000 for the Library. These funds were then earmarked in the City’s Capital Improvements Program for the purchase of land. In 1963, the site at Manchaca Road and Stassney Lane was purchased, and although construction didn’t begin until 1973, once underway, the Manchaca Road Branch was completed in only a year. Opening ceremonies for the branch were held on September 5, 1974.

Since then, the branch has expanded and deepened its role within the South Austin community through its programs for youth, its educational courses for adults, and its ever-growing public access computer services.

Today, although the size of the branch has remained the same, the population of the branch’s service area has grown from around 35,000 residents in 1974 to over 45,000 today.
