Archives Clinic Offers Preservation Tips for Battered Treasures

Austin, TX — Cherished photographs stuck together? Trying to salvage Grandparent’s old love letters from WWII or precious video of your baby’s first steps? Stop by the annual Archives Clinic at the Austin History Center, 810 Guadalupe on Saturday, October 28, 2006 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. to learn how to make your memories last for lifetimes.

The public is invited to bring in their special materials and learn how to organize and preserve their important papers, photographs, scrapbooks, home video and audio recordings, electronic records, and other documents. Students and faculty from the University of Texas School of Information, along with staff archivists from the Austin History Center and other local archives, will be on hand to assess your materials and tell you what it takes to preserve them. Free literature will also be available.

This free preservation workshop is the culminating event of Archives Week, sponsored by University of Texas student chapter of the Society of American Archivists and the Austin History Center.

“Almost everyone has a favorite photograph that has some kind of mold damage or has faded because it wasn’t stored properly,“ said Sue Soy, manager of the Austin History Center. “Most of us don’t think much about how important preservation is until a document that is important to us is damaged and needs to be restored or preserved. We are pleased to be working with UT’s student archivists and preservationists. These experts are dedicated to documenting and preserving history because they know that preserving archives is a central component to protecting our individual rights, cultural heritage and collective memory.”

For more information about the Archives Clinic or other Archives Week events, the public may call archivist Ben Grillot (512) 974-7386 or SAA UT President Sarah Quigley (512) 740-6008. The History Center is located at 810 Guadalupe Street, next to the John Henry Faulk Central Library.
