8th Annual Earth Science Week to Begin for
Austin Public Library
The 8th annual Earth Science Week (ESW) program is a nationwide
event designed to promote interest and knowledge of the earth sciences and the professionals who
play a vital role in our society. The Austin ESW Consortium is planning various activities for
Austin ESW that will be celebrated the week of October 9-15.
One of the highlights of Austin ESW is a drive to collect funds for
the Austin Public Library to purchase much needed earth science books for school aged children.
This year during the month of October the public is invited to make a donation
at any Austin Public Library location in the “Buy one for the Library”
donation box sponsored by the Austin Public Library Foundation and those funds will be used to
purchase earth science books for school aged children. Over the past several years the ESW drive has
raised over $8,000 and the library has purchased over 300
books in the earth science fields. The John A. and Katherine G. Jackson School of Geosciences at
U.T. Austin have generously offered to match up to $2,500 to support Austin ESW. Donations are
tax-deductible and contributions can be mailed to Margaret Baguio (Austin ESW Consortium member)
at the Texas Space Grant Consortium [501(c)3 nonprofit], 3925 West Braker Lane, Suite 200,
Austin, Texas 78759. One hundred percent of all contributions will be donated to the
library.
