New Managing Librarian Hired to Run
the George Washington Carver Branch

Cynthia Charles is the new Managing Librarian for the Carver Branch of the Austin Public Library (APL). She received her Masters in Library and Information Studies from the University of Texas in Austin in 1996 and her Bachelor's degree in General Studies from the University of Houston-Downtown in 1994. She most recently was the Director of Library Services at the D.R. Glass Library at Texas College in Tyler, Texas. She has been an Information Technology librarian at Dell Computer Corp., and library intern at 3M Corp., Austin Center. Cynthia was President of the Special Libraries Association, Diversity Leadership and Development Program from 2000-2001; received the Faculty of the Year Award at Texas College in May 2005; and the William R. Powell Achievement Award for Library Services from the Texas Association of Developing Colleges - Lavon Marshall Professional Development Conference in May of 2005. She's a member of the American Library Association - Black Caucus & Information Technology Divisions, the Texas Library Association - Black Caucus Division, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and the Eastside church of Christ in east Austin.

Ms. Charles, is a native of New Orleans, but she now calls Austin, Texas home. She had lived in Austin for nine years before leaving to work and live in Tyler, Texas for the past 2 years. Her daughter has been attending UT-Arlington University for the past three years. Cynthia and her family have strong ties to the east Austin community; her daughter attended Kealing Junior High School (the school on the Carver campus) and her family worships in east Austin. She feels that their spiritual roots are in east Austin and she strongly feels she can give back to the community by providing quality library service at the Carver Branch. “This branch has a strong history and we want to always be on the cutting edge of library services not only in east Austin but throughout the entire city,” says Cynthia Charles. Cynthia is happy to be back in Austin for many reasons but she admits she is a huge Texas Longhorn fan! Hook 'em!

The Library invites the public to a reception in Cynthia's honor on Tuesday, August 2, 2005 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Carver Branch, 1161 Angelina. Please join us in welcoming APL's newest librarian.
