Austin, TX—Special guest speaker Anita Perry talked about the importance of dating violence prevention as she applauded the “Choose Respect” Austin Community Partners—SafePlace; Austin Independent School District (AISD); the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Capital Area; and the Wired for Youth Centers of the Austin Public Library—during the Choose Respect Wrap-Up Party on Wednesday, May 18th in the Fulmore Middle School library.
“As first lady and a former nurse, I am committed to ensuring the health and wellbeing of young Texans,” acknowledged Anita Perry First lady of Texas. “I am encouraged knowing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention chose to partner with local community leaders including AISD, Austin Public Library, Boys and Girls Clubs and SafePlace to teach our youth about building healthy relationships at such a critical time in their lives.”
Austin was one of only two cities in the nation selected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help develop and pilot the “Choose Respect” dating violence prevention campaign—February through May 2005. The Austin Wrap-Up Party recognized the Community Partners for making this one-of-a-kind outreach campaign successful for thousands of teens. During the party, SafePlace announced a “Dating Violence Prevention Week” in February 2006; and awarded selected teens from each partner program for creative expression on preventing dating violence.
