An Evening with Poet Raśl Salinas
On Thursday, September 11, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. the Hampton Branch at Oak Hill, 5125 Convict Hill Road of the Austin Public Library will host Austin poet Raśl Salinas, Director of Resistenica Bookstore and Casa de Red Salmon Press. Salinas is the author of three poetry collections; Viaje/Trip (Chapbook), East of the Freeway, and Un Trip Through The Mind Jail, plus the forthcoming Indio Trials: A Xicano Odyssey through Indian Country (Wings Press), as well as, two spoken word CDs, Los Many Mundos of Raśl Salinas and Beyond the BEATen Path. His literary work has appeared in numerous anthologies and journals. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Austin Public Library. Proceeds from the book sales benefit the Austin Public Library. The program is free and the public is invited to attend. For additional information call (512) 892-6680.
About the Author:
Xicanindio elder poet and human rights activist Raśl Salinas is the Director of Resistencia Bookstore/Casa de Red Salmon Press, a literary venue and center for aspiring writers in Austin, Texas. Salinas also conducts intensive creative writing clinics locally and throughout the country with disenfranchised youth. These clinics are held in conjunction with a variety of arts organizations, correctional facilities, and social service agencies. Raśl Salinas' work with various political movements has earned him an international reputation as an eloquent spokesperson for justice. He has worked extensively with the American Indian Movement and the International Indian Treaty Council. He is a co-founder of the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee. He is also an adjunct professor at St. Edwards University, Austin, Texas.
