AUSTINITES DUG HOLES

In it's second year the 2003 Mayor's Book Club exceeded the Library's expectations. Since the launch in April 2003 the selected book, Holes had been checked out over 5,000 times and over 300 people participated in group discussions across the city and at area branch libraries. The movie based on the book was released across the Country on April 17 shortly after Austin selected the book as the second title to its annual citywide initiative to "Keep Austin Reading."
To wrap up the Mayor's Book Club the Austin Public Library partnered with the Austin Parks Foundation and presented the movie to an audience of approximately 1,200 as part of the Time Warner Movies in the Park series with special assistance by Alamo Drafthouse. On Wednesday, October 1 busloads of children were brought to the program from area middle and elementary schools and hundreds of kids watched the movie with its creator, Louis Sachar. Republic Square a downtown city park was brought to life with children of all ages patiently awaiting their very close encounter with the author of the book and screenplay. Music was provided by a local group, the Melancholy Ramblers and concessions were provided by the Austin Parks Foundation. The Friends of the Austin Public Library sold both the book and movie of Holes with proceeds benefiting the Austin Public Library. Louis Sachar signed hundreds of books in a quick 40 minute session.
Before the featured movie began, Mayor Will Wynn greeted the crowd and welcomed special guest Louis Sachar, author of Holes. Sachar was interviewed on stage by moderator Spike Gillespie, an Austin writer, and braved a stream of questions from admiring children.
The City of Austin and the Austin Public Library would like to thank all of our partners and sponsors of this year's reading campaign: the University of Texas Humanities Institute, the Austin Public Library Foundation, H-E-B, FOX 7, Tokyo Electron America, Austin American-Statesman, the Austin Chronicle, the Friends of the Austin Public Library, and area bookstores.
Plans are in the works for next year's Mayor's Book Club pick! Visit the Library's Web site in the coming months to find out what the next book will be to KEEP AUSTIN READING.
