Can't find what you want at APL? Don't give up, here's hope!
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) allows Austin Public Library card holders access to materials which are not available from the Library's collection. Under this federally funded program, the Interlibrary Loan staff can search the catalogs of other libraries, and can often locate unusual or out of print items. The process takes from four to six weeks, and the service is free unless the lending library charges a fee which is passed on to the borrower.
Use WorldCat to Send ILL Request
For quick ordering please use our new method of sending ILL request via WorldCat>.
- Search the database for your title. Submit the request using the "Send ILL Request" icon.
- View the Illiad Logon Screen. Logon to Illiad or register as a new user. Detailed written instructions are available.
- After logging in or creating a new user account, a request form will fill in automatically with your WorldCat request.
- Review the request form. Select a format and a library fee. These required fields do not update automatically.
- Submit the form using the “Submit Request” icon.
Follow this link for detailed written instructions on how to use the WorldCat system. Take a visual tour of instructions for the entire ILL online process including instructions on using our new Illiad system.
When using the online system you are limited to 10 requests per customer.
Limitations on What Can Be Borrowed
There are other limitations on what can be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan. For example, books from other Austin Public Library locations should be requested with a reserve form, not through Interlibrary Loan. Materials that are difficult to borrow through Interlibrary Loan are:
- audio-visual materials
We accept requests for all audio-visual material, however A/V material is difficult to receive because there are a limited number of libraries that lend A/V.
- periodicals
Periodical requests are limited to requests for photocopies out of the issue and not the entire issue as most libraries do not lend hard copies of their periodicals.
- recent publications (current year)
ILL will accept requests from APL customers for current year publications beginning in the fall of the current year.
- best sellers
Bestsellers are not available through ILL as long as they are held by Austin Public Library.
- genealogical publications
Many libraries will make photocopies of table of contents and indexes of genealogy books in lieu of sending the book. You may request additional photocopies from the index and table of content information.
- multi-volume encyclopedia sets
Customers can no longer order encyclopedia sets. We can no longer afford postal costs to mail multi-volume encyclopedic sets. Replacement cost is high if the set is lost in transit, at the Austin Public Library or in the U.S. Mail.
