The Charles Whitman materials at the Austin History Center come from a number of sources and in a variety of formats and document the mass murder committed by Whitman from The University of Texas Tower on August 1, 1966. Secondary research materials include A
Sniper in the Tower, a biography of Whitman; published historical
essays interpreting the event; and a history of Brackenridge Hospital.
Primary research materials include oral history interviews with victims,
medical personnel, reporters, etc.; inquest dockets containing death certificates;
newspapers published at the time of the event; and photographs. One of
the most significant portions of this collection is the Austin Police
Department records of the case, which contain police reports; witness
statements; reports and correspondence from other law enforcement agencies;
and diaries, calendars, and personal effects belonging to Whitman.
The public has access to most of these materials during normal business
hours. Researchers wanting to view the police department records may see
photocopies of the records without an appointment. In order to see the
original documents, appointments must be made ahead of time with the Manuscripts
and Archives Curator.
