CREWMEN (with caboose) on the Austin-Hempstead line, Houston & Texas Central, c. 1900. A train's caboose once served as the conductor's office, an observation post, and as a resting quarters for the crew. That function began to disappear, however, as crews grew smaller and as electronic monitors were installed on the back of trains. [PICA 05777]
