The following are our best resources for current information and statistics on Austin and Travis County. Academic Excellence Indicator System Report (AEIS)
An annual report produced by the Texas Education Agency using information from school districts as required by state law. Contains district-wide and school-by-school statistics such as attendance and dropout rates and performance on TAAS tests during the previous school year.

America's Top Rated Cities: A Statistical Handbook
Concise statistical profiles of 76 cities receiving high marks for business and living environment indicators. Appendices offer comparative statistics ranking many items including rent, health care costs, cost of living, hourly wages, per capita income, poverty rates, and much more.

Area Wage Survey
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' biennial survey of earnings for workers in a sample of occupations. Covers Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis, and Williamson counties. Austin American-Statesman
Daily newspaper, indexed on-line since 1981 for items of local interest. Complete run from 1871 on microfilm. Available on CD-ROM for keyword searching and retrieval of full text articles from 1989 to 1995. The full text of articles (1989-present) is also available on the Internet at all Austin public libraries.

Austin Business Journal
Weekly source for business information in Central Texas. Includes list of new incorporations in the greater Austin area. Selected articles from the current issue are available on the WWW as well as major articles from issues dating back to June 1996.

Austin Chronicle
Local alternative newspaper with coverage of politics, entertainment, books, arts, and culture. Selected articles from all issues dating back to 1995 are available on the Internet.

Austin Newcomer Study I and II (1997 and 1999)
A newcomer is defined by the Benchmark Company as someone who has been here three years or less. This data describes preferences in a wide diversity of areas like favorite restaurants, favorite financial institutions, and radio and TV stations used.

Austin 2000: An Original Research Study of Central Texans About Working and Living in the Greater Austin Area
Using survey techniques, the Benchmark Company provides data that gives us a brief look at Austin's workers, keys for retaining employees, the lure of Austin now and in the future, and lifestyle indicators. For example, 85% of the adult 1100 respondents in this survey have completed at least some college and 36% feel the quality of life in Austin is improving while 35% feel it is not. Data for this survey was collected in March-April of 2000.

Book of Lists
Annual compilation published by the Austin Business Journal containing lists of the largest Austin companies in different fields, such as real estate, banking and finance, and travel and meetings.


Capital Area Planning Council Regional Directory
Lists local government officials and provides brief demographic data for the region.

Census Reports
Using U.S. Census data, the City of Austin Planning and Development Department reports changes in population, distribution of ethnic groups, housing stock, and household characteristics from 1970 and 1980 to 1990 with detail to the tract level. Comprehensive census information is available at the Census Bureau Web site. The Austin History Center also has PCensus for updated demographic data.

Central Texas Sustainability Indicators 2006
Sustainability indicators recognize the complexity and interdependence of the environment, economic development, and social equity. The Indicators Project is five years old and has produced three reports.

City Budget
Complete proposed and approved annual municipal budgets. Both the approved and the proposed budgets for the last five years are available on the City's Web site.

City Charter and Code
Contains all active ordinances of "a general and permanent nature." Includes the Austin City Charter and local amendments to Uniform Building Code, Plumbing Code, etc. Indexed and updated regularly.

City Commission Meetings
Minutes of meetings of City boards and commissions: Electrical Utility, Library Commission, Historic Landmark Commission, Water/Wastewater, Planning, etc. Incomplete runs since 1979. Some meetings are also available on videotape.

City Council Agendas and Minutes
Weekly documentation of actions of the Austin City Council since 1971. Videotape recordings since April 1984. October 1995 through current Council minutes are available on the Internet.

Cole’s Cross Reference Directory (also known as Criss Cross)
Annual Austin metro area directory, arranged by address and telephone number. Contains a Census Tract Marketing Section that includes streets and blocks in each trading zone and other marketing information. ZIP code Marketing Section lists market planning counts by ZIP code and an alphabetical list of streets for each ZIP code. Has a slightly different format than Polk’s Austin City Directory, which is arranged by names and by address.

2-1-1 Texas Community Resource Database (from United Way Capital Area)
This database is a helpful resource to locate assistance available in many areas such as financial, employment, health, education, housing, food, and many more.

Directory of Austin Area High Technology Firms
Compiled annually by the Austin Chamber of Commerce, this list contains basic information about high-technology businesses and related statistical data. Includes lists of high-tech manufacturers and firms specializing in software development and service, as well as a list arranged by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC). Web addresses included.

Directory of Texas Manufacturers
Lists Austin (and other Texas-based) industries including the number of employees, sales figures, and SIC Codes.

The Flick Report
Bimonthly magazine that includes articles about Austin’s commercial real estate market and listings of commercial properties for sale and lease.

Greater Austin 2001 Business Desk Reference
Lists Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce membership, contains a Buyer's Guide with helpful Web site addresses and e-mail listings, and provides a guide to Chamber services.

Growing a Global Technopolis--How Greater Austin Scores
Reports the results of the Global Technopolis Study to generate baseline data about the current level of activity of Austin's technology companies in international markets and to gather information about how they view Austin as a "jumping off place." Two hundred small and mid-sized companies identified as doing business in international markets were contacted and 53 responded. Sponsors of the study include Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, the University of Texas at Austin, Foreign Business Management Consultants, KPMG LLP, Thompson & Knight and US Market Access, Inc.

Growth Watch Report
Quarterly statistical reports and annual summaries compiled by the City of Austin. Contains demographic, economic, and environmental indicators, and levels of development activity, and use of municipal utilities. (Since December 1984). Includes links to the 2000 Census figures.

Hay Local Area Pay Survey: 2001 Austin Area
Compiled periodically by Austin Human Resources Management Association in cooperation with the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce and the Central Texas Compensation and Benefits Association. Market Profile Analysis: Austin SMSA
A Dun & Bradstreet subsidiary annually combines census data with updated estimates for population, household income, home value, education/labor indicators, length of residence, etc. Also has sections on business market factors, new construction information, and deposit date for financial institutions. Arranged by ZIP code and/or by census tract.

Metropolitan Austin Interactive Network (MAIN)
MAIN hosts local nonprofit Web sites free of charge and links to nearly 400 other nonprofits. The Business Assistance section of MAIN includes listings for most of the Chambers of Commerce in the metropolitan area. MAIN also links to guidelines for building accessible Web sites.

North American Industry Classification System
Replaces the Standard Industrial Classification published in 1987. Data was compiled in 1997 and published in 1998 for this volume. Cross references to the 1987 SIC codes are provided.

Lists businesses and residences within city limits of Austin by name, address, and telephone number. Includes a classified listing of businesses. Often includes individual’s place of employment and indicates which entries are for new householders and/or homeowners. Contains a demographic profile section by ZIP Code.

State of the Region Report: A Review of Current Issues for the Communities of the 22 Counties of the CAPCO and AACOG
The Capital Area Planning Council and Alamo Area Council of Governments produced this report in conjunction with their May 1998 Conference to consider solutions to local and regional shared problems.

Texas Business Climate: Taxes, Technology and Trends
Produced by Angelou Economic Advisors, Inc. in 1997, describing research of the current climate for business in this state. Provides an SIC code listing in the Executive Summary section.

Texas Market Segmentation Study
Produced by the Texas Restaurant Association concerning eating and eating places around Texas. This directory includes Austin in the Austin-San Marcos Metropolitan Statistical Area and also includes a section for each county in Texas. The next issue will cover 1998 and production on it will begin in November 1999.

Texas Trade and Professional Associations
Authored by Rita Wright with the Bureau of Business Research at the University of Texas, this listing provides contact information for trade associations across the state. Latest edition available is year 2000, and re-publication is not planned.
