Refreshing Watercolors at ABIA

AUSTIN, TEXAS – From a scene of the Italian town Lake Orta to a black & white vista of the Austin Skyline, the colorful and bold watercolors from the Austin based art group, Waterloo Watercolor, fill the Airside East Gallery at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Landscapes, nature studies and fanciful illustrations are brought to life through the hands of 22 artists. In Janice Haecker’s “Georgetown Pottery,” the magic of painting a scene with an unintentional arrangement of clay pottery against a stark white rectangular wall provides a visual statement about how differently artists look at life, find interest and design in the most innocuous of places. Barbara Ashley Price’s illustration, “Bovine Love,” takes place in a quiet, wildflower-filled pasture, interrupted only by a friendly and gentle nudge of two bovines who, like two old friends, share a moment of peace and plenty together. Next to it is Floyd Pettengill’s “Don’t Forget Me,” a watercolor depiction of a cold winter’s day on a farm sprinkled with snow from a blanket of diffuse grey and steel blue clouds overhead. This refreshingly real looking scene, with its clean lines and perfectly blended colors, reminds the viewer that cooler days are ahead, even in Austin.

The Waterloo Watercolor Group has been in Austin since 1977, supporting and networking with artists who use all types of water based paint media. The diversity of the media is revealed in Martha Paisley Ruth’s “Pathway Above Lake Austin.” A thick application of acrylic paint on canvas gives the first impression of an oil painting. Similarly, Beryl Kerwick’s “Blue Room,” a symphony of blue and yellow paint, mimics the style and techniques of the 19th century impressionist oil painters. Still life objects, mainly studies of flowers, are delicately rendered by artists Gwen Dennis, Sue Kemp and Patricia Feille. The exhibit ends with a humorous calligraphy piece by Jan Robin Green titled, “Air Dog.” Painted block text announces to the viewer the message, “In the world of tomorrow, today is yesterday.”

The Waterloo Watercolor Group exhibit is on display through October 01, 2009 in the Airside East Gallery located on the concourse behind the Austin Article bookstore across from Gate 8 and in the area of the airport past security checkpoints.
