Fredericksburg artists’ works welcome passengers at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport
AUSTIN, TEXAS – Enchanting creations from Fredericksburg, Texas artists are now on display at the gateway to the Texas Hill Country, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
“I think it’s an opportunity of a lifetime to show what a small town and their artists can do,” says Bert Garcia, Guild President. “Other than Kerrville, this is the first time that we’ve gone outside of Fredericksburg. Seeing Fredericksburg in lights is very exciting. People travel to the Austin airport from all parts of the world.”
The showcase includes samples of over 16 artists and crafts persons belonging to the Fredericksburg Art Guild. The multi-media display features hand-forged copper, sheet metal, wire, fiber, oil, colored pencil and India ink on muslin. Debbie Mason’s framed fiber art captures the enchantment of a Hill Country sunset with her work titled Cosmic Clouds. The bold and subtle colors of the sunset are highlighted by her use of pulled, dyed wool creating a light and airy texture in the clouds. Metalsmith L.H. Stollenwerk forged steel into a delicate collection of roses, with their leaves and stems bundled together to form a free standing, life-like bouquet of floral beauty. A small life-size representation of a pear is artist Bonnie Bondurant’s contribution to the display. The naturalistic rendition of the pear in her oil painting shows her eye for the light, shape and size of the fruit but also the goodness that it could bring.
The Fredericksburg Art Guild has been encouraging art throughout the Texas Hill Country since 1971. As a non-profit organization they have evolved into a strong voice for the arts in the Hill Country, a studio and gallery for their members as well. The Guild sponsors numerous educational and community events such as the First Friday Art Walk in Fredericksburg.
The Fredericksburg Art Guild is on display through July 14, 2009 in the pylon showcases located on the concourse between Gates 7-12 and in the area of the airport past security checkpoints accessible to ticketed passengers only, currently an audience of approximately 20,000 passengers a day.
