Fabulous, multifaceted fabrics on display at Austin-Bergstrom
AUSTIN, TEXAS – Patterns of swirls, blocks of fabric and shimmering threads of golden metal decorate the Airside West Gallery of the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The Austin Fabric Artists group demonstrates how fiber, of all types, can be used as a media for art, from traditional hats to quilted mosaics and handmade batiks (hand-dyeing fabrics by using wax).
Dee Merrell’s “Polly Wants a Bar B-Q” utilizes a cotton fabric collage and machine appliqué to create a quilt featuring the iridescent colors of parrots and cockatiels against a tropical paradise of blue palms. Pam Farley takes folded fabric to form an origami-like design of flying cranes suspended on a beaded thread. Jean Dahlgren’s “Fall” is an over-dyed fabric that calls to mind autumn with thick patterns in organic shapes and in complimentary earth-tone colors.
Sue Foss paints a beautiful scene with Roketzu Batik in her creation “Hasta Flower.” At first glance her technique resembles a watercolor painted on paper.
The Austin Fiber Artists is a group in Austin which promotes fiber arts and artists through education, workshops, style shows and annual exhibitions. They enjoy exploring and expanding all facets of fiber art in Austin, from traditional garment design to paper making. The exhibit is on display through November 3, 2009 in the Airside West Gallery, located on the concourse behind the BookPeople bookstore, across from Gate 10 and in the area of the airport past security checkpoints.
